Circles, Part 1: Tangents and the radius

A line can miss a circle, cut it twice, or just touch it once.

In this lesson you will

  • Tell a secant from a tangent and a line that misses the circle
  • State how many tangents pass through a point inside, on and outside a circle
  • Prove that the tangent at a point is perpendicular to the radius
  • Use the right angle at the point of contact to find lengths and angles
Three positions of a line: no common point, one common point (tangent at $T$), two common points (secant through $A$ and $B$).
