Worked example

Task: On an outline map of India, locate and label the dam on the Mahanadi in Odisha.

Step 1 — Read the clue: river Mahanadi, state Odisha.
Step 2 — Name the dam: Hirakud.
Step 3 — Find the landmark: the Mahanadi in western Odisha, near Sambalpur.
Step 4 — Mark a clear dot on the river, write "Hirakud" beside it and add the letter if one is given.
