Hydrocarbons
Part 1 — compounds of carbon and hydrogen only: alkanes (single bonds) and alkenes (a C=C double bond). Chapter 9 is taught for the school annual examination.
In this lesson you will
- Name alkanes, draw their chain isomers and write their methods of preparation
- Explain the free-radical halogenation of alkanes and the conformations of ethane
- Describe the structure, geometric isomerism and preparation of alkenes
- Predict products of addition to alkenes using Markovnikov’s rule, the peroxide effect and ozonolysis
| Hydrocarbon | Where you meet it |
|---|---|
| Propane and butane | LPG in kitchen cylinders |
| Octane and its isomers | Petrol for scooters and cars |
| Ethene | Raw material of polythene bags |
| Ethyne | Gas welding and cutting |
| Benzene and toluene | Solvents and starting materials for dyes and drugs |
