Same atoms, different molecules
Part 2 — Butane and 2-methylpropane are both C₄H₁₀, yet they boil at different temperatures. Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structures are called isomers. We also meet families of compounds and the rules for naming them.
In this lesson you will
- Draw the chain isomers of butane and pentane and the position isomers of butene
- Decide whether two structures are chain isomers, position isomers or the same compound
- List the characteristics of a homologous series and predict the next member
- Name compounds with one functional group by the IUPAC rules and draw a structure from its name
