The arteries of a nation
Part 1 — A tea packet from Assam, a car from Chennai and a sack of wheat from Punjab all reach your town by transport. India uses land transport (roads, railways, pipelines), water transport (inland, coastal, overseas) and air transport. In this part we study why transport matters and how India’s roads and highway corridors are organised.
In this lesson you will
- Explain why an efficient transport network is essential for development
- Explain the factors that affect road development in different terrains and list advantages and disadvantages of road transport
- State the meaning and importance of expressways, National Highways, the NSEW Corridor and the Golden Quadrilateral
| Mode | Main types | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Land | Roads, railways, pipelines | People and goods across the country |
| Water | Inland, coastal, overseas | Heavy, bulky goods |
| Air | Domestic and international | Fast travel, valuable goods |
