Programmes in India

India was among the first countries to start national programmes for reproductive health.

Population explosion

India’s population was about 350 million at independence, reached 1 billion by 2000 and 1.2 billion in 2011. Rapid decline in death rate, maternal mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR), and an increase in people of reproducible age, caused this rise.
