Concept

$A \cup B$ : elements in $A$ or $B$ (or both). $A \cap B$ : elements in both. If $A \cap B = \varnothing$ the sets are disjoint.

A \cup B = \{x : x \in A \text{ or } x \in B\}, \quad A \cap B = \{x : x \in A \text{ and } x \in B\}
