The four elements of directing.

Directing means instructing, guiding, motivating, leading and communicating with people so that they work towards the goals of the organisation.

Concept

Table of four characteristics of directing: it initiates action, takes place at every level, is a continuous process, and flows from top to bottom
Characteristic	What it means
Initiates action	Work actually starts only when people are directed
Takes place at every level	Every manager directs those below, from chief executive to supervisor
Continuous process	It never stops while the organisation exists
Flows from top to bottom	Superiors direct subordinates
