Learning should be demonstrated.

Not merely through what a student can submit, but through what they can do, apply, and defend.

Pillar 01

Understand

Comprehension beyond the surface.

True understanding is not the ability to regurgitate facts, but the capacity to map new information to existing knowledge structures.

Traditional

Read chapter 4 and answer the 10 questions at the end.

SOYL Method

Given this new concept, explain it using an analogy related to your favorite hobby.

Pillar 02

Apply

Knowledge in action.

Application tests the utility of knowledge. It asks students to take an abstract concept and use it to solve a concrete problem in a novel context.

Traditional

Solve these 20 similar equations.

SOYL Method

Use these mathematical principles to optimize the layout of a school garden.

Pillar 03

Create

Synthesis and expression.

Creation requires synthesis. It demands that students pull from multiple domains, evaluate options, make decisions, and construct something that did not previously exist.

Traditional

Write a standard 5-paragraph essay on the causes of the Civil War.

SOYL Method

Create a historical artifact (like a diary entry or a newspaper article) that reflects the tension of the era, and defend its historical accuracy.

Pillar 04

Defend

Reasoning and justification.

If you cannot defend your position, you do not truly hold it. The ability to articulate why a decision was made, why a solution works, or why an argument is sound is paramount.

Traditional

Select the correct multiple-choice answer.

SOYL Method

Present your solution to the class and answer three challenging questions about your methodology.

Pillar 05

Reflect

Metacognition and growth.

Reflection is the engine of improvement. It requires students to look back at their process, identify what worked, what failed, and what they would do differently.

Traditional

Receive a grade of B- and move on to the next unit.

SOYL Method

Write a brief retrospective on your project: what was the hardest part, and how did you overcome it?

Technology assists teachers.
It does not replace them.

Teacher Control

Our tools amplify a teacher's reach and provide deeper insights, but the pedagogical decisions, the relationships, and the final assessments remain entirely human.

Responsible Use

We believe AI is a powerful tool for learning when used as a thought partner, not a shortcut. We hold students accountable for the integrity of their work.

FAQ

Questions about the SOYL Method

What are the five pillars of the SOYL Method?

The five pillars are Understand, Apply, Create, Defend and Reflect. Together they move students from comprehension, through application and creation, to justifying their reasoning and reflecting on how they learned.

Why do assignments need to change in the age of AI?

Because the finished artifact alone no longer proves that thinking happened. When technology can generate essays, solve equations and write code in seconds, learning has to be assessed through the process, the reasoning and the student’s ability to use knowledge.

What is the difference between a traditional assignment and a SOYL assignment?

A traditional assignment asks students to produce an answer, such as completing twenty similar equations. A SOYL assignment asks them to apply the idea in a new context, for example optimising a school garden layout, and to explain and defend what they did.

How does SOYL Academy approach responsible AI use?

SOYL teaches students to use technology as a thought partner. The method demands transparency in their process and holds them accountable for the integrity of their work.
